This book has high ratings, so I was expecting it would bring something interesting. Oh boy, I was disappointed. If you don't know what racism is, or don't believe it's real, this book is a good introduction. If you already know racism is a common problem, then this book has nothing new to offer.
I'd like to see tangible solutions to the problem. The common solution, that the book also suggests, to fight discrimination with more discrimination obviously doesn't work. The suggestion to be more mindful also has little effect.
While I didn't learn much, it was useful to form my opinion on the topic. I think we should categorise racism as a lack of skill. People evolved to like more other people like themselves. Anything new is treated as a danger, and defence mechanisms kick in. It's a similar mechanism when you hear an opinion that is different to yours. It applies to anything that is different to you. Just like with emotional intelligence, we need to learn how to control our emotions. Racism is an inability to control emotions when presented with differences.
Categorisation would be just a small dent. One of the things I agree with the author is that racism is a very complex issue, and unfortunately, it can't be solved in a day.
